The global transition towards low-carbon energy sources is transforming the economy and global supply chains, principally though the significant change required to the world’s energy infrastructure. The mining industry will have a vital role to play in this process, as energy transition technologies such as electric vehicle and renewable energy generation require significant quantities of critical minerals. The authors discuss how higher demand for critical minerals increases the potential for resource nationalism, providing a country-by-country review of key geographies, and concluding that that the required investment to meet demand quickly and sustainably will only be made through a collaboration between governments and producers/investors.
