David B. Lasater is a Senior Managing Director in the FTI Consulting Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment and is based in Houston and New York. Mr. Lasater has 39 years of experience providing financial economics and accounting advisory services. He has provided expert testimony in federal and state matters, and in both domestic and international arbitrations.
Mr. Lasater’s expertise includes the application of statistical, econometric, finance/valuation and accounting/auditing analyses in litigation and non-litigation assignments. Additionally, he has advised, reported and testified in litigation assignments ranging from class certification at the outset to liability and damages determinations. He has also provided strategic and valuation consulting in M&A transactions.
Mr. Lasater's litigation case experience includes securities class actions, employment class actions, product liability and product liability class actions, investment suitability, accountants’ malpractice, intellectual property, breach of contract, breach of trust, lender liability, predatory pricing, fraudulent conveyance, transaction investigations including FCPA and AML, franchise termination, and U.S. Tax Court cases.
In product liability matters, Mr. Lasater has performed numerous damages analyses, ranging from those arising from children’s toys to over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, to polybutylene plumbing, to owners’ losses of secondary market value of their vehicles due to liability notoriety. Notably, he has also rebutted other experts’ use of lost product value surveys, with particular emphasis on the non-coverage and non response bias in those surveys.
Mr. Lasater’s industry experience includes financial services, manufacturing, assembly, distribution, telecommunications, internet publishing, cable TV services, energy, aerospace, engineering R&D, hospitality, pharmaceutical and chemical, environmental, software development, federal and state government agency operations, and healthcare. Mr. Lasater has provided both affirmative and rebuttal statistical analysis in numerous settings including medical (payment claims processing, medical practitioner group post-transaction procedures and billing, drug prescription and dispensing), employment (compensation, promotion and training), and in causation and damages studies in the recent Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities litigation environment.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting in 2003, following the arrival of Sarbanes-Oxley Rules, Mr. Lasater was a partner in KPMG’s Forensic Dispute Advisory Services practice and national coordinator for the practice’s securities litigation and employment class action services (2001-2003).
From 1991 – 2001, Mr. Lasater was an international partner in Arthur Andersen’s Claims & Disputes practice, based in its New York office. During 1991-1996, he was quality control partner for business valuations produced from the Corporate Finance practice, New York office. Before joining Arthur Andersen, he was a member of the Graduate School of Business faculty, accounting at Michigan State University for eight years.
Mr. Lasater holds a Ph.D. in accounting, finance, and quantitative methods and a Masters in Professional Accounting, both from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelors in Business Administration (accounting) from the University of Houston, and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in New York and Texas.
