About Jason
Jason Shafrin, Ph.D. is part of the Center for Healthcare Economics and Policy. Dr. Shafrin has over 15 years of health economics research experience serving as trusted advisor and expert to a wide variety of healthcare life sciences companies, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Dr. Shafrin is an expert in applied economics with a specialty in health economics research. Over his career, he has developed novel methodological approaches, advanced quantitative analyses and innovative modeling to address some of the most difficult health economics problems and provide evidence-based solutions for clients across the healthcare industry. His work has assisted clients addressing policy changes, navigating regulatory processes, evaluating pricing, value and outcomes and supporting innovation and transformative change. Dr. Shafrin’s extensive experience includes projects on value assessment, alternative payment model design, discrete choice experiment survey, real-world data analysis, and digital medicine.
Dr. Shafrin is a distinct thought leader. His economics research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals including, but not limited to, BMJ Open, Health Affairs, Health Economics, Health Services Research, JAMA and Value in Health. Dr. Shafrin’s research spans the health economics discipline. Some examples of his published work include quantifying the economic burden of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation in the U.S.
Dr. Shafrin has also created a bespoke survey and microsimulation model to quantify the impact of mobility impairments in older Americans on the overall U.S. economy. To better understand the efficacy-effectiveness divide, Dr. Shafrin used clinical trial, health insurance claims and registry data to predict how well oncology therapies would improve real-world overall survival based surrogate endpoints collected in clinical trials. Dr. Shafrin also led a multidisciplinary portfolio of research that quantified the economic value of digital medicine technologies for patients with serious mental illness.
Dr. Shafrin makes frequent media appearances including interviews with National Public Radio and the Washington Times on topics such as proposals to reform U.S. drug pricing policy as well as the evolution of the cost of care under Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges plans. In the popular media, his articles and thought leadership on critical issues in healthcare and economics have appeared in leading publications such as Forbes, the Health Affairs blog, STAT News, U.S. News and World Report, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and others. He is the founder and editor of the Healthcare Economist blog.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Dr. Shafrin served as a Vice President at PRECISIONheor, where he conducted health economics research for the life sciences industry. He also was a Policy Lead at Acumen, LLC, where Dr. Shafrin helped the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implement value-based purchasing programs for hospitals, physicians, and home health agencies. Dr. Shafrin also served as the Director of Research and a Scientific Advisor to the Innovation and Value Initiative (IVI), an NGO dedicated to making value assessment more patient-centered.
Dr. Shafrin received a Doctorate in Economics from the University of California, San Diego, and two Bachelor degrees in Business and Public Policy and Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania.
