About Marshall
Marshall Schlimer is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting’s Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment and is based in New York. Marshall has more than 30 years of experience providing audit, risk and advisory services to public and private organizations tackling complex accounting and control issues, such as revenue recognition, goodwill, taxes, acquisitions, dispositions and public offerings.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting in May 2022, Marshall was a Partner for more than 20 years with Deloitte’s New York advisory practice. He has served a multitude of clients, including commercial banks, brokerages and commodities, Japanese manufacturing and trading companies, as well as credit card, insurance, real estate, telecommunications, fintech, media and internet institutions. Over the course of his career, Marshall has successfully led a number of high-profile projects, investigations, acquisitions and regulatory consent orders in the United States and abroad. He built several front-office service lines to generate new business and has also set up and managed a few back-office risk and compliance functions.
Marshall’s background in audit, risk and forensics suited him ideally for internal control work, so after the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley (“SOX”) in 2002, Marshall was instrumental in helping numerous public companies establish and manage SOX control programs. After the passage of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act in 2007 (“J-SOX”), he led the J-SOX response team and also worked directly for a number of large Japanese companies to help them implement and manage J-SOX programs. From 2014 to 2019, Marshall served as the Director of Internal Controls for the Deloitte U.S. firm.
Marshall now endeavors to transform internal audit and control groups from cost centers into valued strategic advisors by focusing on risks stemming from financial reporting, regulatory compliance and operations. He is a proponent of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (“COSO”) framework and risk-based programs that use technology to minimize human error through data analytics and automation. The goal of these efforts is to standardize many routine, low-risk audit and control processes across functions, business lines and subsidiaries to free up critical resources so they can focus on high-risk areas. The results often reduce duplication of effort while closing risk gaps, breaking down silos amongst accounting, internal audit, SOX, risk, IT, legal, compliance, regulatory, treasury and other stakeholders.
